Notice, I said 5 “smart” ways. It’s easy to purchase followers or just follow those who follow you back using an app. It’s not as easy to gain genuine social media followers organically, but here are a few tips to help you out.
1. Develop a relationship with your followers
When you have a new follower on Twitter, for example, don’t automatically follow that person back. Take a look at their profile and decide if the connection will be beneficially mutual. If it’s just a service company offering to buy likes or someone just trying to sell you their services, how genuine is the relationship going to be? Thank people for following you, sharing your posts and if someone comments, send a genuine reply – at the very least, like or favorite the comment.
2. Ask questions
For some reason, asking a question tends to get more engagement than a statement. Respond to answers and additional questions your question might trigger in a timely manner.
3. Post good content
Although it’s not always easy, post content that is helpful to your followers. Provide information that will help your target market. Try to be humorous. Images and humorous posts tend to be shared more often than text alone.
4. Avoid controversy
Try not to post an update that will spark negative comments or start an argument online.
5. Post throughout the day
I try to schedule posts throughout the week and then sprinkle my feed with shared posts that are pertinent to my message. Add events or trending topics as they occur. Look at your insights or metrics and post during those times when there has been more engagement.
