Social media has exploded in terms of popularity in recent years. According to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center, approximately 74% of all Internet users access social media sites. With experts predicting this trend to continue, business owners should maintain a strong presence on social media. Today, we’re going to reveal some all-too-common social media marketing mistakes made by small business owners.
Failure to Use #Hashtags
Don’t underestimate the importance of including relevant #hashtags in your social media posts. These tags are used to categorize content so it’s easier for users to find. While there’s no rule stating that you must include #hashtags in your social media posts, doing so will increase the visibility of your posts, allowing you to connect with more users.
Overlooking Paid Advertising
When it comes to social media marketing, you have one of two different options: you can use free/organic methods, or you can use paid methods. Facebook offers several different paid options via its Facebook Ads program. Rather than relying strictly on organic traffic, consider using Facebook Ads or similar paid advertising platforms to increase visits to your social media profiles. You can often attract visitors for as little as couple cents per click, which is small price to pay for the ability to promote your products or services to a larger audience.
Focusing Strictly on Facebook
With more than 1.3 billion monthly users and counting, Facebook might be the world’s most widely used social media network, but that doesn’t mean you should overlook other networks. Diversifying your efforts across multiple networks will give you the upper hand. Check out the list below for some other leading social media networks:
Google+
Twitter

Not Knowing Your Target Demographic
You can’t expect to launch and maintain a successful social media marketing campaign without first identifying your target demographic. Depending on the particular social media network that you are using, you may be able to pull demographic data from it. For Facebook, you can access this information from the “Insights” tab at the top of your page. Once here, you can see what percentage of your fans are men, what percentage are women, the countries from which they come, and other relevant information.
